Why is hay so important for rabbits and guinea pigs?
Hay keeps their digestive system moving and wears down their constantly growing teeth. It should make up about 80% of their diet and be available at all times.
Which hay is best: oaten, lucerne or timothy?
For adult rabbits and guinea pigs, a high-fibre, lower-calcium grass hay such as oaten hay is ideal for everyday feeding. Lucerne is richer and is usually saved for young, pregnant or underweight pets.
How much hay should I give each day?
Offer unlimited fresh hay, roughly a pile about the size of your pet each day, and replace any that's soiled or damp.
Do guinea pigs need extra vitamin C?
Yes. Guinea pigs can't make their own vitamin C, so give them fresh vitamin C-rich vegies daily along with a quality guinea pig pellet.
Why do rabbits and guinea pigs need hideouts?
They're prey animals and feel safer when they have somewhere to hide. Provide at least one hideout per pet to avoid squabbles.
Is it safe for my pet to chew wooden hideouts?
Untreated natural wood is safe to chew, and chewing helps keep teeth healthy. Avoid painted, varnished or treated wood.
How should I store hay?
In a cool, dry, well-ventilated spot away from sunlight. Don't seal it in plastic, and discard any hay that smells musty.
